"Partnership" is one of those words that MSPs love and clients have stopped hearing. It's on every website. It means nothing.
Here's a quick, honest test. Answer these five out loud.
The five questions
- Do you re-explain your business every time you log a ticket?
- Does your current provider proactively reach out about anything that isn't a renewal?
- Can you name the person who owns your account?
- Do you know when your last quarterly review was?
- If your provider stopped tomorrow, is there a document that tells the next provider how your environment works?
If you answered "no" to three or more, you don't have an IT partner. You have a ticket void.
What partnership actually looks like, when it's real
- Continuity of humans. The same tech leads know your business. Handoffs happen internally so you never re-explain your setup to a new face.
- Proactive contact. 30/60/90-day check-ins after onboarding, then a regular rhythm after that. If your provider only talks to you when they're sending an invoice or a renewal, that's not a relationship.
- A named account owner. Someone whose job it is to know what's happening across your account and be accountable for it.
- A live documentation set. Not something you have to ask for; something you can access whenever you want.
- A rhythm. Quarterly business reviews as a diary standard, not a "when we can fit it in."
Why we bang on about this
Because the tech is now much more commoditised than it used to be. The tools all do broadly similar things. What differentiates one provider from another is whether the relationship is present or absent.
There's a reason our first-panel social media post is literally "You need an IT partner, not a ticket void." We don't say it because it sounds nice. We say it because we've watched enough businesses spend years being ignored by their provider to know that ticket-void experiences are still the norm.
How we hold ourselves to it
- Named account lead on every managed engagement.
- Internal handoff notes, not "please provide access again."
- QBRs on the diary at signup — not left to chance.
- A live client portal you can log into to see your own numbers.
